Jaffna.
Jaffna which is originally known as Yaalpaanam in Tamil and in Sinhalese it is called as Yapanaya, was ruled by Indian Tamil kings and was a Portuguese colony, a Dutch colony and was later a British colony. So it got much kind of old European monuments like churches, colleges and forts. These and virgin white sand and golden sand beach make it as a good tourist destination for the European tourists.
The Jaffna town people are really like the foreign tourists and assist them with out looking for "Baksheesh". There are no beggars to annoy you and common people just pass with you a smile on their faces with a curiosity look.
When visiting temples, don't wear your foot wear and head gear. Just keep them in a safe place or give it to keepers. Some temples like Nallur Murugan Temple may request the male worshipers to remove shirts.
There are no late night activities in the town and people use to get up early in the morning to start their day before the sun rise.
Every where you can find popular American soft drinks and bottled mineral water with or with out cooled. Very good phone service and postal service is available all over the Jaffna peninsula.
There is public and private transport service available morning till early night. The best transport for local people is their bicycles, where they still preserve their 100 year's old Raleigh bicycles. You can find British Austin cars in good running condition along with BSA and Triumph motor cycles. So don't forget to take your Digital camera with enough memory to capture them.
Nearly all the people speak English in the Jaffna, so you can communicate with common people freely in English.
